Account book, 1852, with miscellaneous, loose receipts, 1850-1852 and 1865. The account book includes accounts for railroad cars with their load weights and dates of arrival at various railroad stations including: Jonesville, Coldwater, Hillsdale, Adrian, White Pigeon, Sturgis, Bronson, Bristol, Constantine, and Elkhart. Among the miscellaneous receipts are two signed by George Armstrong Custer, who served as the local tax collector in Monroe (Mich.) in 1851-1852.

Custer's paternal ancestors, Paulus and Gertrude Küster, came to the North American English colonies around 1693 from the Rhineland in Germany, probably among thousands of Palatines whose passage was arranged by the English government to gain settlers in New York and Pennsylvania. According to family letters, Custer was named after George Armstrong, a minister, in his devout mother's hope that her son might join the clergy.
